correspondence: NOT a lost art

My dear friend, Christine, and her family are adopting a little boy from Wuhan, China.  His name is Wu YueHe, and he is one handsome fellow!

Hi, Wu!

When he comes home, this is who will love him forever and ever!

Okay, not all of those cute kids are his siblings.  Only four of them...the rest are ours. Did you gasp out loud for a minute there? :)

This is the Mommy and Daddy longing to hold their son:

Wu YueHe, you have one fine family.

Wu's family just sent him a beautiful care package, including this message inside:

To my sweet son -

It has been six months since we fell in love with you  - only a 2 by 3 inch photo to gaze at.  Our Lord certainly captivated our hearts.  We are forever grateful!  We have official immigration approval so in some sense it seems like things are moving right along.  But you do seem so very far away and though the days go fast in our busy home, we simply long to be with you.  We are getting ready to send you a care package.  It has been so fun to choose things for you and for your sweet foster parents.  It delights my soul knowing that we can love you in this way right now.

School is wrapping up and then we will all be on summer vacation.  During this time we will finish getting your room ready and start getting organized for our trip to China.  We also get to venture to South Carolina to be with family - I can’t wait for you to meet your cousins and grandparents.....your church family and your school family.

You’re getting up to start your day and I am getting ready to call it a day.....but nonetheless, I will pray for you as I do every day.  May you be blessed.  May you continue to be strong and healthy.  May you be prepared for your new family by God’s grace.  May your foster parents continue to care for you with excellence and love!  May the Lord protect you and keep you.  May He move our process and may we all trust in Him for His perfect timing.

Good Night, little guy!
Our love to you from the desert!
Mommy

When she sent me the letter to read via email, I wrote this back:
BEAUTIFUL! So beautiful.  I want you to write me that letter too.  Surely a friend can receive mail like that? :)

What a keepsake for sweet David.

I know, I'm really articulate and deep.  Just ask me.

Christine responded with this beautiful missive:

To my sweet friend, Sara,

I have been longing to be with you.  To have coffee with you.  To walk through Bachmanns with you.  To plant our spring flowers together and select new fabric for hand sewn napkins for the patio.  How I wish we could sit together and REALLY catch up.  Not about the day to day busy lives of our children or the endless tasks that need to be accomplished, but about things of our hearts.

I know God will bless us with that time soon.  Until then, know that I uphold you in fervent prayer.  I think of you often and I might even have to put a care package together for you.  I know you will be busy packing for your China trip soon.  I can't wait to see you go and be united with your lovely daughter.  I simply can't wait!!!

It is almost summer for you and your family.  That means lake time and swimming and fishing and turtle hunting.  Remember to look through some magazines and think of me!  As you work on Emma's room, I will be working on David's and I will think of you!

God bless your day.  Sweet prayers being said for Luke today!
Our God is Jehovah Rophe.....He will act according to His will in Luke.  Praying for healing from all seizures and for stability to come to the village in his amazing brain.

Love to you ---

For me, my friendship with Christine has truly brought Proverbs 27:17 to life, "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another".

The Lord truly blessed me with your friendship, Christine, all those years ago when I called you about the Bible Study group in the church bulletin.  Who would have known the deep ties our Heavenly Father would forge in our lives?  A friendship that is founded on faith and draws so deeply from our love of our Lord.  I love you!  It is a privilege, a blessing and a true pleasure to call you my heart friend~ for all these years.

Emma Kate, you and David can know from silly and sweet correspondence like this, the legacy of love and friendship that God brings to a life.  So very sweet it is.

Love you, Christine!  Thank you for my sweet letter.

(Oh, and I can't wait for you to receive YOUR care package in the mail from little old me!  Watch that box!)
