My boys love me when I come up with summer reading programs and bible studies for their edification because I am their wonderful Mom.
This summer, to stay abreast of that title (wonderful Mom), I took it upon myself to institute not only a summer bible study, which happens for them annually, but also a reading list.
If they had their druthers (that word makes me think of my Grandma, Big G, so I love to use it. That and the "biff", but that's not as easy to appropriately use on a blog) they would marinate in Science Fiction all the days of their lives. I like Sci Fi. I read their books; partly I read their books to make sure those books are okay to read. AND, it is time to expand their minds.
So. Here it is. And I need do broaden it a bit. So any suggestions are welcome.
Criteria: Non-Fiction. Grow the mind to see a different part of the world or time in the world. Christian themes preferred.
COOPER AND JEB'S SUMMER READING LIST 2010
Roots, by Alex Haley
The Hiding Place, by Corrie ten boom
Night, by Elie Weisel
Heavenly Man, by Brother Yun
When Invisible Children Sing, by Chi Huang
The Good Earth, by Pearl S Buck
God's Missionary, by Amy Charmichael
That's as far as we are.
The thickness of Roots has them both avoiding it and reading the other ones first. Cooper said he couldn't put "Night" down. We had a great talk about it. "When Invisible Children Sing" is written about Bolivian street children, and I almost dropped it in the lake when the author stated he was from Park Street Church in Boston! That is where our new senior pastor is from, and so it was fun to make that connection in the book. Hard read emotionally. And the book, "Heavenly Man" took my breath away. Incredible description and account of the house church movement in China and the faithful believers who followed and trusted in God in grueling circumstances and hardship.
And for Bible Study this summer, the older boys are doing the prequel to "The Truth Project" called, TrueU. True U is geared for teens. I'm not a teen, but I'm really excited about it.
They are so relieved this isn't the summer I made them do the Beth Moore study on Paul! That was a hoot. For me. Not so much for them. Ha.
They'd love to do Trace James' Revelation class, but I don't think I have it in me this summer to delve into that with them. Christine, Angie, Jenn, Kris: whaddya think? :)
See? The definition of "wonderful Mom" means different things to different people. I find wonderful in book lists and bible studies. I do let them sleep in, too.
