Emma started speech on Friday!
We will attend once a week on Friday mornings with our darling and already beloved speech pathologist, Noelle.
This week, we are working on accurately producing the "gh" sound of "g". As in, "go!".
Emma is learning to place her tongue in a new place. She hasn't had palate on the top of her mouth before, and it is an entirely new thing to be able to raise up the middle of her tongue to make this sound.
It was so interesting to watch Noelle teach her the method for producing the sound. Emma worked diligently, and the lure of a bag of "Emma M's" at the coffee shop on the way out of the hospital proved helpful! Momma knows best.
Emma and I are working in short bursts three different times during the day on her speech. We have homework this week in three different areas. The "G" sound, as well as working on placing hard consonants at the ends of words. This week it is "B" and "P".
Noelle explained that in mandarin there are not hard consonant endings on words, so Emma isn't necessarily leaving them off as part of her speech issues related to her palate. She is more likely omitting them because they are unfamiliar at the end of words. So it is learning English speech patterns, not learning how to make those sounds. She is doing well with the "b" and "p". She doesn't love it, but she's working hard.
And when she purposely adds the ending in normal conversation, she turns her head to the side and bats her eyes at me! She is soooo cute. And charming.
I am excited to chronicle her progress. For her especially, I'm so happy that she will be more readily understood.
She has much to say, and a lovely little voice to say it in!
So off we "go, go, go" {to our day}!
Love,
Sara and Emma

Congratulations, EK! You are going to do great with Noelle! And great reading the process, Sara. WE wondered by David added vowel sounds to the end of english words ending in hard consonants....perhaps it is for the reason you outline here. Interesting!
We are so glad Emma is getting all she needs to blossom and grow. What a champ!
Love to you all
Christine
Still tracking with you on this amazing journey!! Loved seeing Anna get her Bible on Sunday!
