Emma's arm cast covers her hands so that only her little thumb sticks out, and extends to just below her elbow.
Our doctor cautioned us that often these type of arm casts loosen and can come off of children. The solution is to cast up around the elbow so the arm is bent and the cast stays in place.
In a bit of mercy for Emma, who has two casts, they opted to do the abbreviated version of the arm cast. Her elbow is not casted and her arm is free to move about.
Do you see where this is going?
Um.
Her thumb suddenly disappeared into the depths of her cast. It wasn't sticking out jauntily any longer. We examined her cast and gave it a little push back up and another smallest tug down and...ta da! Oops.
I was holding her cast in my hands, and her arm was UNcasted.
We all audibly gasped aloud, looked wide-eyed at one another, and burst out laughing.
I wish it had been captured on tape.
So yes, the hand is now gingerly re-wrapped in sterile bandages, albeit more minimally than before, and the cast has been gently "shoved" back on her hand.
However, the surprise removal gave us all a sneak preview. A glimpse. A "showing"!
We saw five fingers!
Yes, we did. And Emma counted each one with the H.U.G.E.S.T. grin on her face.
Anna, our resident ambassador of curiosity regarding all things medical, afterward came up to me and whispered softly into my ear, "Mom, I don't think I want to be a doctor anymore when I grow up. All that dried up blood made me feel sort of sickly and the stitches were yucky".
Clearly my daughter.
And oh so cute.
The sneak preview has us so excited. The real unveiling is next Tuesday morning.
