Let the celebration begin!
Emma Kate's hand is fully healed!
Praising the Lord for this beautiful work.
She has five fingers on her right hand and five fingers on her left! Her skin grafts look lovely. The infection is completely gone and her hands are totally restored.
It is wonderful. WONDERFUL!
Tomorrow, you will see us {drum roll and cheering crowds, please!} at the pool! Emma Kate? She cannot wait. I'm thinking she will be our early bird riser tomorrow morning with all the anticipation in the air.
And tomorrow? Cooper's cast also comes off!
Wahooooo!
One darling story: at night we have been taking Emma's bandages off in order to give her hand fresh air. Last night after I'd tucked the girls I walked by their room. Anna was reading so the light was still on. I could see Emma Kate from the hallway, and stopped to gaze. Suddenly, I noticed she was counting her fingers on her right hand, over and over again. I was rooted in place trying to discern if she was solemn and a bit sad or feeling content and joyful about it. Finally I crept in and snuggled up with her, noticing her quiet smile.
"Emma Kate. Tell me about your counting", I whispered.
"Mom. I'm counting my fingers. I can count to ten. I have five and five", she shared.
"Emma Kate, are you happy?"
"Oh, mom. I love home. I am so happy. I come here and you love me. Look at my hand".
Be still my heart.

little bit of this, little bit of that
I keep waiting to write a new post because I'm wanting photos to accompany that I'm writing...
and the photos are elusive.
So tidbits is what you get!
Luke home (undiscernably) sick today quickly followed by Jeb with another migraine. That boy is growing! Jeb, being that boy. All that makes Emmacakes gleeful. She's happiest with her "people" surrounding her!
Emma had her second week of swimming lessons. Total rockstar! There were two other kids in her class and she spent the time encouraging them and telling them "good job"! She swam underwater with confidence and emerged in full-fledged glory of smiles and glow. Water girl.
"Raffi", aka Giraffe, otherwise known as Cooper received his new moniker earlier this week after the unpteenth upturned plate, this time spaghetti. On the dining room rug. All over said rug. (I was calm. It was too late to freak out!). It does not rival the Great Spaghetti Incident of his 14thish month, wherein he flung an entire bowl of spaghetti from one end of the dining room to the other, through the living room and onto the couch and window all the way over that long way!
Raffi was sure he was wrongly named, until a wise and sage mother smilingly reminded him of the cereal, the milk, the chips, etc, etc. And then gently shared one of the glories of growing by leaps and bounds is...ungainliness. He is our little big giraffe. And I hope our home survives it all.
His father, however, is now nicknamed by Raffi, "Old Yeller". I leave that to your imagination. It was hilarious when Jim received the nickname after teasing Coop for all his "Raffiness".
I'm not sure if you are still even following me or if your eyes are glazing over now.
It's January. Glazed eyes are part of the territory. Right?
Okay. Tidbits.
Emma's surgery is REscheduled for February 14th. She will only be having her palate repaired. This is totally the Lord's catch, and His complete provision. A "chance" conversation with a nurse resulted in the Lord unraveling some confusing aspects of who was doing the surgery, where and why. The end result being that we now have the surgeon we want doing the palate repair. This is a huge praise! AND the doctor who is doing her hands and feet wants to do those repairs separate from the palate, so that is scheduled for April.
My mom is flying out to help us in that first week. What a blessing. It will make such a difference to have her to shuttle the elementary kids to school while Emma can stay home with me. And knowing the grocery runs can be covered and I will easily be able to keep all things liquid in stock for the recovering patient is wonderful. I know she will also be a great companion for house-bound me. We can Florence Nightingale together!
There are numerous surgeries ahead of us, so I think I will create a sidebar where I can list them and it will make it easier for people (Nana, Papa, Gogo, Pa, KZ, Christine, Kathleen etc) to follow. You can add your name to those parenthesis if you want! I have no idea if anyone else even reads this blog! :)
Other tidbits.
We are waiting on school notifications for next year. If God brings us to mind, please pray for us that His very best be done and we rest in where we land. I have my hopes, but am trying not to pin them too firmly on one place, even though really at heart I have. I will share more when we know.
January has been long and cold. I'm really ready for February's arrival. Only a northern girl greets February with joy. It seems it is always one of my more productive months as I am so mentally ready for spring.
I FINALLY finished painting the kitchen cabinets! Really and truly. Done! Now I've got all the trim primed and hope to complete it by this weekend. Jim still hasn't noticed that the family room is also painted. The fingerprints on the walls were not washing off, and five kids makes for lots of wear and tear. A beautiful fresh coat of paint worked wonders! And it is a different color. It is a beautiful soft mossy green with tan and gold undertones (and my description of it does it no justice whatsoever).
That's all the news from Lake Woebegone. I mean, Meadowbrook.
No photos, rambling paragraphs and all!
The quiet is a blessed hush. And we are grateful for a peaceful January.

Ling at the worms
just for the record.
so did Cooper.
Ling does like China! And now she is going to fling a matching game aroudn the room with her daughter. Playing it "matching style" is not on the ticket right now...we are into the throw and have mama make a big dramatic silly game of picking it all up again! Mama to the rescue.
Jim is in the bathroom....we are having an interesting morning racing each other there. I have yet to sing, "The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out" song to him. :) GROSS!!!!
It is pouring rain outside, and we opted to skip the tour of the temple this morning in lieu of a family day alone. We all need it. We'll head out around the lake when it clears up later on. For now, we are so content to hang out in our room.
The boys are burrowing in and decided it was a good day for homework. We are going to shut the doors between our rooms and give them a bit of peace and quiet.
I can't wait to tell you all about our visit to her orphanage. Parts of it were beautiful, and parts just broke my heart. One quick highlight was being able to get video of two boys who are on the shared list (up for adoption) right now!!!! Their files are woefully out of date and list them as not walking. NOT TRUE! They were climbing, running, walking, totally mobile darling boys. SO cute, engaged, darling and sweet. We have video of it, and are very much hoping to advocate for them. I know this information will make a huge difference in helping them find their forever families. They are wonderful boys. They will make a family very happy and blessed. I can't wait to see who the families are...like a treasure hunt! The Lord knows already, and I picture the heavens watching in anticipation as they are drawn together!
Love to you all. Emmacakes is doing GREAT! SO great!

Day 3, hour .5
8am. Slept in until 8am. Seriously vacation time.
Usually Jim and I are true early birds. For me, it is carrying the Taylor torch. And Grandpa DeBoer's habits, minus the 6am call to check on the weather! Early birds all over the place on my family tree.
Coffee. With Cooper.
Luke wearing Pa's Hamline sweatshirt for the second day in a row. Wearing it because it is Pa's. And Luke is President of the fan club. Quote of the day yesterday, "Pa is the the best skiier ever". Um, it is summer and no one else was even talking about skiing. For Luke, it all comes back to Pa.
The weather up here in northern Wisconsin is so glorious. The sky last night over the lake as the sun dropped down over the horizon was breathtaking. We all agreed it looked like a postcard it was so perfect. It felt fake! The sky is a light summer blue in the days with puffy cotton ball clouds that occasionally whiz by. Quick, cheerful clouds. The water shimmers in the sun. It reminds me of 30 years of summer up here. All I need is my sister, a boom box, a diet coke and some spf 4 with lemon juice in my hair and I'd be 15 again.
I wish my camera would download pictures to this computer. And somehow I just know the pictures would not do the beauty of this place justice! Perhaps the fact that this may well be our last summer here has me taking note of each day and treasuring it away in my heart. Lake Tahkodah has been a sweet gift for our family. We are grateful for each and every year.
Cooper is now down fishing at the lake. Jeb is in the bunk house reading in bed (a boy after his mom's heart!). Luke and Anna are rustling around for breakfast. And that must mean my post is surely done.
Emma Kate, what are you doing now? It's night where you are and I imagine you tucking in for the night. Bless your sleep, in Jesus name, my sweet one. I can't wait to look at the sky with you, see the morning arrive with you here in our home, and feel the warm weight of you in my arms in the summer sun.
Love from the cabin,
Sara
